Cellars are also type of basements. In some states in America, people crowd to the cellars when tornado passes by and devastate their towns. Therefore, basements in that particular part of the world are used for shelters in case of a calamity. Through the rest of the days, this part of the house would serve as a bedroom, storage rooms for tools and many other materials, and even living room for the respective occupants of the house.

For this type of basement, it would not accurately protect the refugees inside during the catastrophe if it has a full size window. With what this basement is intended for, a window with a smaller size is recommended just for enough air for ventilation not for illuminating purposes. However, in the other parts of the world, where weather conditions are friendly, cellars are for storage of food, and particularly wine. These cellars only need enough light also and windows are for ventilation only. In storing food and wine, cellars maintain are ideal to maintain lower temperatures.

Full size windows are advisable for a daylight basement. Of course, the geographical situation of the area is to be considered in having this kind of basement. The name of the basement itself suggests that the place is intended to require much light. Look out basements are built on flat grounds.
